What kind of artist do you want to be? Are you interested in floral art, still life painting, bar scene paintings, science fiction, manga, or seascape painting? Many people have a natural talent and some learn it in later life. Many students learn art on their very own. Others attend art schools for four years. Many students use art manuals and art videos to teach themselves.

To improve their skills, they claim to need better brushes. A few art instructors say to add a touch of blue. This is not about the brushes. Yes, the lighting could be better in the areas where you paint or draw. But it is not the blue. It’s the lack of visual fundamentals that is the problem in many art schools.

These are the basics that determine quality painting and drawing.

1. DRAWN: Practice drawing regularly. Never forget an artist’s blank sketchbook. Draw everything that you see. Practice, practice and more practice! You can study drawing in books. The only way to become an expert is through constant practice.

2. Understanding that the form is at the core of everything. A sphere is an apple. A cylinder has a trunk of a forest. One egg contains the head of a human, and so forth.

3. LIGHT AND SHADOW: An entity’s physical appearance changes depending on its form, how it is illuminated and its “local” color. Take, for example: “Paint” the word of orange on a piece of table. According to a viewer’s point of view, if a strong warm light hits the orange directly from front and to the right and is coming from the left side as well as above it, then the color and value values are shown below:

Rich average orange

Agile. Little less orange.

This rich orange will gradually become darker and less sensitive to color as you move toward the shadows of the orange

Darker and cooler as you move into the shadow of orange

Further away from light, the colors are more like maroon and alizarin crimson.

This is because the light reflecting off of the table top causes the dark side to lighten a bit.
